That Was The Year That Was

The sun streams down on this ice-cubed city,

Showing Nature's remorse for its assault without pity.

Trees lift and rebound as they are freed from a freeze,

That brought this city to its buckling knees.

In its wake, we were left without heat ; in the dark,

And ended this year with an exclamation mark.

Some good resulted from this catastrophic storm,

It diverted our attention away from Rob Ford.

Mayor Ford likes his ice, but he slipped on a blooper,

By smoking on video during a drunken stupor.*

That story wraps up a year less than zen,

And ad nauseam made headlines on CNN.

As this year winds down and we put it to rest,

I offer a recap of this year's best.

A few babies were born to movers and shakers,

A joy to their parents and instant news makers.

Prince George, will one day be "His Royal Highness",

While Kanye and Kim birthed a live GPS.

From the "Wild Side" to South Africa, we lost some we adored,

And numerous victims by monsters abhorred.

We saw justice unserved and laws undefined,

And learned Lady Justice is not colour blind.

We saw floods and typhoons and security leaks,

And watched a government shut down and go to sleep.

Spying and espionage within government circles,

Checking apps on the cell phone of Angela Merkel.   ;-)

Human error and disasters from Nature's own hand,

Painted tragedy on the geography of humanity's land.

From crack smoking Mayors to Mayor wannabes,

Who were "carlosly dangerous" when sending selfies.

We rejoiced to the rumour that the Biebs will stop workin'.

But to our chagrin, Miley's still twerkin'.

Be you north, south or east, or even North West, *

Have a happy new year with all the year's best!

Footnotes:

* "Yes.  I have smoked crack cocaine. But do I?  Am I addicted? No. Have I tried it?  Probably in one of my drunken stupors, approximately about a year ago."

-Toronto's Mayor Rob Ford's admission to drug use.

North West is the name given to Kim Kardashian's and Kanye West's daughter.
